Cocktail Hour: Hornby Haze
Introducing Cocktail Hour, a new series where I’ll share a different cocktail recipe every other week! It will feature experiments out of my own kitchen, and exciting concoctions I try on my adventures around my city.
Hornby Haze
For the first ever Cocktail Hour post, I’m proud to share a drink invented by none other than my very own Dad. Named after our hometown of Hornby, Ontario, the Hornby Haze is a tropical fruity drink, perfect to quench your thirst on a hot, summer afternoon and instantly transport you to the beach. Thanks Dad!
What you need:
- 1.5 - 2 ounces Malibu Rum (it’s not as strong as regular rum, so you can afford to be a little heavy handed)
- A splash of banana liquor
- Pineapple juice
- Cranberry juice
How to make it:
Add alcohol and pineapple juice to a cocktail shaker with ice, shake vigorously and pour into a tall, highball glass filled with crushed ice. Then top with cranberry juice – this is the “haze” that creates those beautiful layers of colour, and it adds a little tartness to balance an otherwise sweet cocktail. If you like things a little more tart, you can always add less pineapple and more cranberry juice. Garnish with fresh fruit (strawberry or pineapple work well) and as many tropical themed decorations as you like!
Why I love cocktails:
I love cocktails because each one is a unique work of art that often involves layers of flavour, delicately balanced. A cocktail doesn’t just have to be tasty, it has to be eye-catching as well. When making a cocktail, you have to think about every detail right down to the shape of the glass it’s served in, and there are a multitude of options. You’ll notice some cocktail menus are starting to include illustrations or descriptions of the glassware that comes with your cocktail because, let’s be honest, when it comes to your choice of cocktail, you have to think about what will make for the most attractive boomerang cheers on your Instagram story!
I’ve always loved to make classic cocktails at home, like a tart Margarita or a boozy Old Fashioned, but now I’m starting to experiment with my own recipes, learning the art of what makes a good cocktail and how to build it from the ground up. And of course, enhancing any skill involves a fair amount of field research ;) Follow along on my cocktail journey and I’ll share everything I learn with you!
